Obituary

George Lawrence Schmidl, of Cleves, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on August 10, 1937, in Kingwood, West Virginia, he was the beloved son of John and Anna (Palinowski) Schmidl.

George lived a life rooted in faith, family, and service, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.

After graduating from Kingwood High School, George spent three years serving in the United States Army as a Sergeant and Dental Technician.

Outside of work, George had a deep devotion to his faith and served as a deacon at St. Joseph Church in North Bend and St. Anne Church in Hamilton. He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, where he enjoyed fellowship and service to his parish and community. George dedicated 30 years of service to Presentation Ministries, serving as a leader and helping to strengthen the faith of countless individuals. He spent much of his time with family and tending to his garden. He will be most remembered for his kindness, gentleness, and patience.

George was reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife, Kay, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his children: Teresa (Schmidl) Wood and Glen Wood; Paul Schmidl and Jamie (Jansen) Schmidl; Mark Schmidl and Leah (McCann) Schmidl; Jane (Schmidl) Barnes and Dr. Barry Barnes; and Joan (Schmidl) Belleman and Keith Belleman.

George was blessed with many grandchildren: Rachael (Wood) Compton and Zachary Compton, Lauren Wood, Michael and Alexandria Wood, Aaron Wood, Zachary Schmidl, Caleb Paul Schmidl, Rebecca (Schmidl) Beck and Benjamin Beck, Laura Schmidl, Daniel Schmidl, Abigail Schmidl, Veronica (Schmidl) Jaeger and Aaron Jaeger, Andrew and Paige Schmidl, John and Natalie Schmidl, Anna Schmidl, Mary Schmidl, Grant Barnes, Ryan Belleman, Kyle Belleman, Evan Belleman, and Adam Belleman.

He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Benjamin Compton; Isabella and Rhett Jaeger; and Gerard, Clare, Martin, and Francis Schmidl. He was preceded in death by his great-grandsons, Jude and Thomas Schmidl.

George is also survived by his siblings, Mary Gwaltney and John Schmidl.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 22, 2026, from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 25 East Harrison Ave, North Bend Ohio. Visitation will be immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial.
